Your oak floor is likely to stay through several changes of furniture and wall colour.
It is a useful place to start when choosing wallpaper. Look at the boards you actually have: pale oak, a golden finish and a dark stain will give the same wallpaper quite different company.
You can repeat the warmth of the wood or make it more noticeable through contrast. Neither approach requires the wall to match the floor.
With a pale oak floor, compare a warm, softly painted design with a more visible pattern. Soft Abstract Beige has blended beige and cream colours. Gingham Sand gives you a check in a similarly gentle palette.
The difference is in what the wall adds. The abstract design introduces painted marks without a regular shape. The check makes the pattern more apparent while keeping the colour restrained.
Look at the size and contrast of the grain in your floor. If the boards already have strong knots or dark streaks, you might prefer the softer changes in the abstract. If the floor looks fairly even from the doorway, a check can give the room a detail it currently lacks.

It is easy to start looking for a wallpaper that will somehow remove the yellow from a golden floor. A cooler wall can make the contrast more obvious, so first decide whether you want that contrast.

With dark-stained boards, take account of the other large surfaces before choosing a deep wallpaper. A dark floor, dark sofa and dark background will have a different effect from a dark floor beneath pale furniture.
You do not have to rule out a strong design. Look first at how much of its background is light. A wallpaper can have vivid flowers and still leave plenty of pale colour on the wall. That can be a useful balance when the floor already supplies the darkest part of the room.
If you prefer a darker wall, bring a lighter element higher into the room through the curtains or upholstery. You will have something to look at beside the wood and wallpaper, rather than judging two dark surfaces in isolation.
Take a photograph that includes the floor and something else you intend to keep. Compare your wallpaper options against that same view. Changing the imagined sofa, curtains and wall at the same time makes it much harder to see whether a design works with the room you own.
Start with the floor. Choose the effect you want beside it. The smaller colours can follow once that relationship looks right.
