Turn of the Century Wallpapers & Wall Murals

Turn of the century wallpapers capture one of the most visually distinctive periods in design history. Spanning the late 1800s and early 1900s, this was a moment when artistic styles were shifting dramatically, with Art Nouveau bringing flowing organic curves and botanical intricacy into interiors, while late Victorian design leaned into dense pattern, deep colour and ornate detail. The result is a look that feels genuinely rooted in history without appearing dusty or overdone on a contemporary wall.

Art Nouveau, late Victorian, and the aesthetic in between

What makes turn of the century design so compelling as a wallpaper choice is the range of visual moods it can carry. Art Nouveau motifs tend towards sinuous lines, stylised flowers and natural forms rendered in rich, earthy or jewel-toned palettes. Late Victorian wallpapers, by contrast, often favour structured repeating patterns, deeper grounds and a sense of layered formality. Both share an attention to craftsmanship and surface detail that gives them a presence on a wall that more minimal styles cannot quite replicate. Mural wallpapers drawing on this period can range from large-scale botanical compositions to intricate geometric repeats, depending on the specific design direction.

Rooms that suit the depth of the era

Formal dining rooms and entrance halls are natural settings for this kind of wallpaper. The intricate motifs and warm, layered colour palettes of the period pair well with dark wood furniture, brass or bronze fittings, and textiles like velvet, wool or linen. A richly patterned wall mural used as a feature wall in a dining room can anchor the whole space without needing much to compete with it. Primary bedrooms are another good option, particularly where the existing palette already includes deep greens, terracotta, burgundy or warm neutrals. In a hallway, even a single wall treated with a turn of the century design can give an immediate sense of character and depth.

Mixing historic wallpaper with a modern interior

These wallpapers do not have to live in period properties to feel at home. Placing a richly detailed turn of the century wall mural against pared-back furnishings and a neutral interior lets the historical pattern become a deliberate focal point rather than a wholesale period look. This approach works particularly well in homes that mix design eras, where one strong historic piece acts as a counterpoint to contemporary furniture rather than trying to recreate an authentic Victorian or Edwardian interior. Keeping surrounding colours simple and letting the wallpaper carry the visual weight tends to give the best result.
