1970s Wallpapers & Wall Murals

The 1970s brought a boldness to interior design that still feels striking today. Geometric patterns, psychedelic swirls, oversized florals, and a palette built around mustard yellows, burnt oranges, and deep olive greens defined the decade, and these are the qualities that make 1970s wallpapers such a strong choice for rooms that need real personality. The era had a confidence to it, and wallpapers inspired by it carry that same quality into a contemporary home.

Bringing the 1970s into a living room or home office

A feature wall in a living room is a natural fit for this kind of design. Paired with a velvet sofa, a rattan side table, or a low-slung mid-century sideboard, a 1970s-inspired mural wallpaper can pull a whole room together without much else needed. The warm tones of the era also work well in a home office or reading nook, where the retro energy can feel creative rather than too intense. If the pattern is particularly bold, keeping the surrounding walls in a neutral warm white or a soft terracotta lets the design breathe without anything competing with it.

Earthy tones, warm wood and the right finishing touches

One reason 1970s wallpapers sit so comfortably in modern interiors is the palette. Mustard, ochre, burnt sienna, and deep avocado green are all tones that pair naturally with warm wood floors, brushed brass fittings, and textured textiles like boucle or chunky knit throws. These combinations feel grounded rather than nostalgic for its own sake. A wall mural with an abstract or large-scale floral motif works particularly well in a bedroom for this reason: the earthy warmth tends to feel settled and characterful without needing the room to carry much more.

Subtle geometry or full-on seventies pattern

Not every 1970s-inspired approach needs to fill the room with drama. Smaller-scale geometric prints from the era can work across multiple walls in a hallway or bedroom, giving the space a cohesive retro character at a lower visual intensity. On the other hand, a single statement wall in a richly patterned seventies design, a bold swirl or an oversized graphic, can anchor an otherwise understated room with very little effort. Mixing this kind of wallpaper with cleaner, more minimal furniture is a good way to let the pattern do the work without the space feeling overloaded. Either way, the warmth of the era's colour language means the result tends to feel inviting rather than cold.
