Wallpaper - First Steps

Our First Steps wallpaper captures an oil painting by Julia Purinton, featuring a sweet mother donkey leaning gently towards her young foal. Rendered in visible brushwork and soft, earthy tones, the scene sits against a serene rural meadow with pale green fields and hazy woodland in the background. The warm brown and grey-taupe coats of the animals contrast quietly with the gentle pasture, giving the composition an intimate, classic countryside character. Produced as custom made-to-measure mural wallpapers on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface texture, this design brings an understated pastoral warmth to the home.

In the room

We see this design working beautifully in a nursery, toddler room or child's bedroom where the gentle depiction of farm animals sets an affectionate, peaceful scene. Because the two figures form a clear central focal point, we recommend placing this wall mural on an open, relatively uninterrupted feature wall, such as behind a crib, low bed or changing area. Beyond children's spaces, the classic painterly style suits a rustic guest room, a quiet study, a country hallway or a cosy dining area. In spaces with soft daylight, the painterly transitions between the earthy coats and pale meadow backdrop come through with gentle clarity.

Styling it

To complement the rustic, pastoral atmosphere of the painting, we suggest pairing the wallpaper with simple, natural elements. Furniture in warm wood tones, such as aged pine, muted oak or off-white painted finishes, harmonises naturally with the traditional oil-paint character. In bedrooms and nurseries, soft wool throws, washed linen drapery and woven storage baskets help balance the wall without competing with the painted subjects. Keeping surrounding furnishings understated ensures the central interaction between mother and foal remains the highlight of the room.

Colour combinations

The artwork centres around rich earthy browns, taupe, soft creams and muted meadow greens, accented with gentle hazy olive in the background trees. For adjacent walls, woodwork and trims, we recommend drawing out the lighter shades from the sky and meadow with warm off-white, soft cream or a delicate muted sage. If you prefer deeper contrast, furniture or architectural accents in warm chestnut, deep umber or earthy charcoal will echo the darker tones in the mother donkey's coat while grounding the overall palette.
