Japandi wallpaper: a soft backdrop or a statement landscape?

Should the wallpaper be a quiet backdrop for your furniture or give your Japandi room a landscape as its focal point? Compare soft grasses with a more graphic mountain scene, and choose according to how much of the design will show above your furniture.

A nature scene can be the room's main picture

Whispers of the Mountain, White is one of the most ordered designs in our Japandi collection. Layers of mountains meet stylized trees, blue details, and a golden sun. It's a design we'd choose as the room's main picture when the rest of the decor is simple.

Give it an uninterrupted wall and let the composition show above a low sofa, sideboard, or headboard. Tall bookcases will hide much more of the landscape. Start by finding a wall that can show the parts of the image you like.

Enter the wall's dimensions in the preview. Look at where the mountain outlines and trees fall as the image is fitted to the width and height. A narrow wall may show a different part of the composition than the wide product image.

Then choose the wallpaper whose role feels right for your room. If you want a full scene, give it space. If you want a softer wall behind your furniture, start with the color transitions and the parts that will show above it.

A quieter wall can still have a visible design

For a softer look, Meadow Grass is a good place to start. Grasses and fine stems rise from the bottom of the image, with more open background toward the top. The colors sit close to beige and light brown.

Here, we'd pay particular attention to furniture height. A tall cabinet can cover much of the grass. A lower piece leaves more of the stems visible and lets the quieter upper part of the wall show above it.

This is an option when you want a recognizable nature design with less color contrast. Compare the full image with Whispers of the Mountain. You'll see the difference between a softer backdrop and a more graphic composition.

Choose the base color and the contrast

Beige wallpaper can lean pink, yellow, or gray. Order a wallpaper sample, a small printed piece of wallpaper, to compare the shades with your floor and furniture at home. Hold it next to the floor or a wooden cabinet and see whether you like the combination. A warm wood floor doesn't automatically call for beige wallpaper.

For more contrast, you could pair a dark detail in the design with a similar shade in a lamp or piece of furniture. A few connections like that can help the colors feel at home in the room. You don't need to repeat every wallpaper color in your decor.

Keep some nearby surfaces simple

A detailed landscape has more room to show when the wall beside it is quieter. We'd pair Whispers of the Mountain with a solid fabric or a painted wall nearby, so the trees and mountains remain easy to see in the room as a whole.

With Meadow Grass, you can give more attention to the shape of a piece of furniture or a single object. The wall brings color and plant forms without as much sharp contrast competing with them.

The samples show scaled-down images, so use the preview to judge the size of the design. Then choose the wallpaper whose role feels right for your room. If you want a full scene, give it space. If you want a softer wall behind your furniture, start with the color transitions and the parts that will show above it.
