Wallpaper - The Franzensburg in Laxenburg

Our The Franzensburg in Laxenburg wallpaper brings a classic historic landscape into the home, capturing a romantic castle with tall towers and pointed roofs set beside a calm lake. Originally painted by Eduard Gurk, this scenic artwork features figures in period dress drifting across the water in small boats, swans near the shore, and soft clouds drifting through a pale sky. Tall trees frame the architectural view, giving the composition a balanced, storybook quality with a delicate watercolour look. Printed made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, our wallpaper is straightforward to hang and brings a tranquil heritage character to any wall.

In the room

Because this is an expansive pictorial scene rather than a repetitive small pattern, we find it works best on an uninterrupted wall where the full lake, castle, and sky have space to unfold. In a living room or formal dining room, placing the mural on a main wall behind a low sofa or credenza lets the water and architectural details remain visible without being split by tall cabinetry. The scenic depth also suits a quiet study, home library, or guest bedroom, where the soft French blue tones and open sky introduce a calm, reflective perspective.

Styling it

To let the historical detail of the mural wallpapers take centre stage, we suggest keeping nearby furnishings relatively grounded and simple. Classic or heritage-inspired furniture in warm, mid-toned woods harmonises naturally with the traditional landscape aesthetic without competing with the fine line work. We would avoid overly busy patterned upholstery or heavy wall hangings on adjacent surfaces, choosing instead solid upholstery and quiet drapery that frame the vista like an opening to the outdoors.

Colour combinations

The design centres on soft French blue, pale sky tones, and earthy greens within the foliage, alongside stone neutrals in the castle architecture. For adjacent walls and woodwork, we recommend gentle off-whites, muted stone, or a soft, dusty blue drawn directly from the lake and sky. If you prefer deeper contrast, introducing rich botanical greens or muted navy through painted doors, trim, or larger furniture pieces grounds the lighter tones of the artwork beautifully.
