Wallpaper - Preparations

Our Preparations wallpaper brings an intimate still life composition to the wall with expressive painterly brushwork. Designed by Kate Jarvik Birch, the artwork focuses on a dark glazed ceramic bowl holding brown eggs, set over a striped tea towel alongside warm directional light and graphic diagonal shadows. What we particularly like is the interplay between the deep inky blues, slate greys, and warm terracotta tones, balanced by the painted highlights on the bowl and shell surfaces. Made to measure on our PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, it works beautifully as a focal point across a feature wall.

In the room

We see this mural wallpaper working particularly well in dining rooms, kitchen eating nooks, and open-plan living spaces where a considered culinary theme feels at home. Because the motif is arranged as a single large-scale still life rather than a repeating pattern, we would give it an uninterrupted wall where the full painted composition can breathe without being crowded by tall cabinets. In a dining area, placing this wall mural behind a dining table lets the angled shadows and warm brown tones ground the entire room.

Styling it

To complement the rich, artisanal feel of the artwork, we would balance the space with natural textures and unpretentious furnishings.

• Pair the wall mural with natural timber dining furniture, such as warm oak or rustic pine, to echo the organic warmth of the terracotta and eggshell tones.
• Choose surrounding fabrics with simple, woven textures like coarse linen runners or cushions that pick up on the painted striped cloth.
• Introduce dark metal details or glazed ceramic tableware to reflect the deep navy and charcoal shades in the bowl.

Colour combinations

The palette in our wallpaper centres around cool slate blues, deep charcoal, crisp off-white, and warm eggshell browns. When planning surrounding surfaces, we would pair it with soft chalky whites or pale grey-blue on adjoining walls to echo the strong diagonal daylight in the painting. For cabinetry, trim, or larger furniture pieces, deeper navy tones or muted terracotta offer a striking connection to the darkest and warmest elements of the motif.
