Wallpaper - Old Map of Italy, 1570

Our Old Map of Italy, 1570 wallpaper brings antique cartography to life across a grand scale. The design depicts the Italian peninsula and surrounding islands set among the Mare Adriaticum, Mare Ligusticum, and Mare Tyrrhenum, complete with historical Latin place names, ornate strapwork cartouches, sailing vessels, and mythical sea creatures. Muted sea tones balance beautifully against the warm parchment ground, olive greens, and terracotta-red accents of the landmass. Produced made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, this design brings historical character and classic craft into contemporary and period homes.

In the room

For a detailed historical cartography design like this, we recommend choosing a wide, relatively uninterrupted wall where the full geography and maritime illustrations can be appreciated without heavy visual breaks. It works exceptionally well as a focal point in a study, home library, or dedicated home office, where the intricate Latin script and detailed coastal outlines invite closer viewing from a desk or reading armchair.

We also see this design working naturally in a dining room or living room, particularly on the main wall behind a low sideboard, sofa, or dining table. Because the upper sea areas and decorative title cartouche carry plenty of open parchment tones, the composition keeps the room feeling balanced and expansive rather than overly crowded. In a hallway or staircase with good sightlines, the sweeping angle of the Italian peninsula creates an engaging visual rhythm as you move past the wall.

Styling it

When styling around this antique map design, we prefer pairing it with classic materials and quieter furniture profiles that allow the historical line work to remain the focus:

• Choose warm mid-to-dark timber furniture, such as walnut, antique mahogany, or aged oak, to complement the aged parchment backdrop and classic heritage feel of the map.
• Introduce natural textiles such as woven wool rugs, heavy linen drapery, or leather seating in muted earth tones to add physical warmth to the room without competing with the detailed print.
• Accentuate the historical cartographic style with understated bronze, aged brass, or matte black iron lighting fixtures, keeping decorative accessories simple and structured.

Colour combinations

The palette of the map centres on a soft, aged parchment beige paired with muted coastal blues, mossy olive greens, and accents of faded terracotta and rust.

When choosing paint colours for surrounding walls, woodwork, and cabinetry, we suggest drawing directly from these tones:

• Pair with warm neutral off-whites, soft stone, or pale linen on adjacent walls to keep the room light and allow the map to stand out naturally.
• Introduce deep navy, slate blue, or rich forest green on trim, wainscoting, or built-in bookshelves to ground the space and echo the maritime ink tones.
• Use warm ochre, rust, or saddle brown accents through upholstery and cushions to mirror the delicate landmass borders and decorative cartouches.
