Wallpaper - Melting

Our Melting wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, brings a bold still-life study of a solitary melting ice cube into contemporary mural scale. Painted brushwork captures the cool refractions of light across pale blue, deep indigo, aqua, and soft sage tones, complete with warm amber reflections pooling on the reflective surface beneath. The striking contrast between crisp geometric shadows and the organic spread of melted water gives the motif a distinctly modern, graphic quality. Like all our wall murals, this design is made-to-measure to fit your wall dimensions and printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure.

In the room

Because of its expressive focal composition and distinct graphic scale, we see this mural wallpaper working particularly well on a dedicated accent wall where the artwork has room to be appreciated in full. In a modern living room, dining space, or creative home office, placing the motif behind low-profile seating or an open desk ensures the central ice cube and surrounding reflections remain fully visible. The cool undertones of blue and green create a fresh, tranquil atmosphere, while the darker navy linework anchors the wall with clear visual presence.

Styling it

To let the artwork remain the clear hero of the space, we would surround it with relatively quiet, contemporary furnishings. Furniture in matte black metal or cool painted finishes echoes the dark outlines in the painting, reinforcing the modern, gallery-like feel. Clean architectural shapes and smooth, unpatterned upholstery work best here, preventing visual competition with the painterly reflections and water contours.

Colour combinations

The motif centers on a cool palette of icy blues, slate, soft mint green, and deep indigo, accented by small touches of warm amber and yellow in the reflection. For surrounding walls and woodwork, we recommend pairing the wallpaper with crisp off-whites, pale mineral greys, or muted aqua tones that gently pull from the background washes. If you prefer higher contrast, deep navy or slate blue on adjacent surfaces or trim will tie directly into the darker painted shadows.
