Wallpaper - Basking In The Light

Our Basking In The Light wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, captures a quiet moment of a calico tabby cat resting inside a strong diagonal shaft of sunlight across a dark floor. What we particularly like about this design is the painterly visual texture and the bold contrast between deep slate teal shadows and bright golden yellow light. The composition has an illustrative, narrative quality with generous open negative space that gives the focal point room to breathe. Printed made-to-measure on our PVC-free paper with a subtle physical surface structure, this wall mural brings an intimate, artistic atmosphere to any interior.

In the room

Because the motif relies on a strong diagonal composition and a distinct narrative focal point, we see this working particularly well as an accent wall in a living room, bedroom, or a relaxed home office. In a larger living room, giving this mural wallpaper an uninterrupted wall allows the dramatic sweep of light across the floor to make its full visual impact without being crowded. The deep, moody tones across the rest of the surface also make it a great option behind a low sofa or a bed frame, where the resting cat remains comfortably in view while the darker backdrop grounds the space.

Styling it

To let the artwork remain the clear focus of the room, we would keep the surrounding furniture quiet and grounded. Low-profile furniture in darker wood or matte painted finishes sits naturally against the deep background of the mural. Because of the strong geometric beam of light in the motif, simple silhouettes without ornate carvings or busy decorative details help maintain a clean, balanced look across the room.

Colour combinations

The design is defined by its deep slate teal, charcoal, and warm amber gold tones, alongside subtle touches of soft cream and pale pink in the cat's fur. For adjacent walls and trim, we suggest drawing out the cooler tones with a muted petrol blue, deep charcoal, or a soft, neutral off-white. If you prefer to echo the warmth of the sunlit patch, accents in ochre, mustard, or caramel on cushions and throws tie into the central light beam without competing with it.
