Wallpaper - The Opening Note

Our The Opening Note wallpaper mural, created by artist Kate Jarvik Birch, captures the fluid motion of rich red wine pouring into a clear glass. Rendered with a hand-painted character, the artwork pairs deep ruby and burgundy tones with cool petrol teal brushstrokes in the background, highlighted by crisp white reflections on the glassware. What we particularly like is the dynamic diagonal composition and graphic clarity, giving the motif an expressive presence on the wall. Produced made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle paper structure, our wall murals are straightforward to hang and make an eye-catching statement in any social interior.

In the room

In a dining room, kitchen, or home entertaining area, we see this design working especially well as an accent wall behind a dining table, open bar cart, or sideboard. Because the artwork features a prominent close-up composition with bold directional movement, we would give it a relatively uninterrupted wall where the full glass and pouring bottle can be appreciated from across the room. In spaces with good daylight, the subtle tonal shifts within the teal background and the bright reflections on the glass stand out with wonderful clarity, while softer evening lighting brings out the warmth of the deep red wine tones.

Styling it

To complement the rich, painterly feel of our mural wallpapers, we would keep the surrounding furniture clean-lined and let the artwork take centre stage. Dark wood finishes, such as walnut or smoked oak, pair naturally with the deep wine tones, while subtle matte black or brushed metal accents echo the clean silhouettes in the painting. For surrounding walls and major surfaces, simple architectural lines and understated furnishings help maintain a balanced, sophisticated atmosphere without competing with the bold subject matter.

Colour combinations

The design itself is built on a striking contrast between deep ruby reds, burgundy, and garnet, set against cool teal, petrol blue, and soft slate grey with bright white highlights. When choosing paint colours for adjoining walls or surrounding woodwork, we would look to deep teal or muted slate to create an intimate, cohesive wrap around the room. Alternatively, crisp off-white or soft warm grey on neighbouring walls provides a clean frame that lets the vivid wine and blue tones stand out distinctly.
