Wallpaper - Nautical Friends Whale of a Time

Designed by Moira Hershey, our Nautical Friends Whale of a Time wallpaper brings a cheerful, coastal illustration straight into the home. At the centre of the composition rests a friendly blue whale wearing a paper sailor hat, complete with a striped life ring looped around its tail and the handwritten phrase "welcome aboard!" anchored below. Framed by a classic twisted rope border and drifting wave motifs, the artwork features weathered, distressed visual textures over an off-white wooden plank background. Made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, this piece is easy to hang and creates an inviting focal point.

In the room

We created this wall mural with young children in mind, making it a natural fit for a nursery or toddler room. Because the composition is arranged as a self-contained framed illustration, we find it works best on an uninterrupted feature wall where the entire character and border remain clearly visible. Placing it on the main wall behind a cot, low bed, or toy storage bench allows the smiling whale to anchor the room without being obstructed by high furniture.

Styling it

To complement the storybook nautical theme, we suggest keeping the surrounding decor soft, playful, and grounded in simple textures. Light painted furniture in crisp white, soft grey, or natural pale timber pairs naturally with the weathered backdrop of the design. Colour combinations

The artwork centres around soft sky blue and denim tones on the whale, contrasted by warm coral-red and slate stripes on the lifebuoy, with brown rope detailing and an off-white wood-grain backdrop. For adjacent walls and skirting, we recommend matching the warm off-white background to keep the room light and open. Soft sky blue or muted sand shades on neighbouring walls also work well to pick out the maritime tones while keeping the overall palette gentle.
