Wallpaper - Spot Swordtail Butterfly

Our Spot Swordtail Butterfly wallpaper mural, created with Mackenzie Nelson, brings an expressive study of a single butterfly into focus against a soft, brushed warm cream background. We love the graphic balance between the bold, dark brown and black wing striping and the crisp white and spotted detailing along the outer edges. The painterly visual texture in the background gives the wall mural a crafted character without feeling overcrowded. Made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, it offers a distinct, nature-inspired focal point.

In the room

Because of the centered, large-scale composition of the butterfly motif, we see this mural working especially well on an uninterrupted accent wall where the full wing span can be viewed from a distance. In a living room, placing it on the primary wall behind a low sofa gives the piece room to breathe. It also works beautifully in a bedroom centered behind a headboard, or in an entryway where it creates an immediate sense of character. For a study or creative workspace, the natural balance of dark graphic lines and calm, light background tones helps anchor the room without dominating every angle.

Styling it

We recommend pairing this design with furniture that has clean, understated lines so the graphic detail of the wings remains the central feature. Pieces in warm natural woods like ash, oak, or rich walnut echo the earthy tones of the wings, while black metal accents in lighting or chair frames tie into the darker linework. Keeping surrounding textiles quiet with simple woven fabrics, neutral upholstery, and soft off-white drapery allows the hand-painted appearance of the mural to stand out naturally.

Colour combinations

The motif itself combines a warm cream background with deep charcoal brown, jet black, and soft white markings. To build a cohesive room around our wallpaper, consider using creamy off-whites or soft parchment shades on adjacent walls and trim. If you want a deeper contrast, bringing in rich espresso, charred wood tones, or dark olive through surrounding furniture or accent pieces will highlight the dark pattern within the wings.
