Wallpaper - Sous-Bois

Our Sous-Bois wallpaper reproduces Paul Cézanne’s impressionist study of a sunlit forest interior, defined by tall, curving tree trunks and a rhythmic canopy of foliage. Slender branches weave through soft greens, muted yellows, and touches of warm ochre and earthy brown, while patches of pale sky filter through the upper leaves. Cézanne’s visible brushstrokes and painterly marks give the composition an expressive, layered appearance that brings an organic depth to a wall. Produced as a made-to-measure, PVC-free wall mural printed on paper with a subtle surface structure, this design is straightforward to hang and brings fine-art character to classic or contemporary interiors.

In the room

We especially like how the vertical rhythm of the slender tree trunks draws the eye upward, making this mural wallpaper well suited to living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms with generous wall heights. Because the motif depicts a continuous forest scene rather than a repeating pattern, we recommend placing it on a wider, relatively uninterrupted wall where the full breadth of Cézanne's landscape can unfold.

In a study, home library, or guest room, the earthy greens and dappled light create a serene, immersive atmosphere behind a desk or low seating. The soft variations in tone balance nicely across longer walls without overwhelming the room, allowing surrounding architectural details like picture rails or tall skirting boards to frame the composition naturally.

Styling it

The artistic heritage and painterly qualities of this design pair well with both French country warmth and understated modern interiors. To complement the impressionist palette, we suggest pairing the wallpaper with mid-toned or warm woods, such as antique walnut or light oak, which echo the earthy browns in the tree trunks.

Keep larger upholstered furniture relatively calm in solid, unpatterned fabrics so the detailed brushwork remains the main visual feature of the room. Matte ceramic accents, woven textiles, and quiet linen drapery add complementary texture without competing with the landscape.

Colour combinations

The palette of our Sous-Bois design is grounded in leafy greens, muted yellow-greens, and warm woodland browns, brightened by soft pale blue in the canopy. When choosing colours for surrounding walls, woodwork, and trim, we suggest drawing out the subtle earth tones with soft olive, muted sage, or warm stone. For a brighter, more open feel, a gentle off-white with warm undertones harmonises naturally with the sky and foliage highlights.
