Wallpaper - Birches in Winter Blue Gray

Our Birches in Winter Blue Gray wallpaper, created by Julia Purinton, captures a quiet forest scene rendered with the soft, layered brushwork of an oil painting. Slender birch trunks rise in vertical rhythm across the composition, emerging through misty tones of pale gray, cool ice blue, and soft off-white. The subtle tonal shifts and impressionistic strokes give the motif a serene, atmospheric depth without overwhelming the eye. Like all our wall murals, this design is made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, making it straightforward to hang.

In the room

We see this design working beautifully on a main feature wall in a living room or a dedicated meditation space where you want to introduce a calm, open atmosphere. The vertical orientation of the birch trunks naturally draws the eye upward, which helps give wall areas a feeling of height and quiet structure. Because the composition relies on gentle tonal transitions rather than high-contrast patterns, it works equally well across a wide, uninterrupted wall behind a low sofa or on a wall framed by doorways and windows.

In rooms with ample natural daylight, the subtle interplay between the soft blue-gray washes and the creamy white trunk highlights becomes particularly distinct. Under warmer evening lighting, the cool undertones soften into a gentle, enveloping backdrop that recedes comfortably behind everyday living.

Styling it

To complement the painterly character and cool palette of our mural wallpapers, we would keep surrounding furnishings understated and grounded in natural textures. A low-profile sofa in oatmeal or soft gray fabric allows the vertical lines of the birches to remain the focal point. Surrounding furniture in pale wood, such as ash or bleached oak, pairs effortlessly with the Scandinavian sensibility of the artwork.

To balance the cool gray and pale blue background, consider introducing subtle tactile contrasts rather than bold patterns. Unbleached wool throws, simple textured cushions, and matte ceramic accents help build a cohesive, comfortable interior without competing with the wall mural.

Colour combinations

The palette within this wallpaper centres on pale pastel gray, frosty blue-gray, muted chalky whites, and gentle charcoal accents along the tree bark.

When painting adjacent walls, we suggest soft off-whites with neutral undertones or pale, misty grays to maintain the airy, seamless flow of the room. For a slightly more grounded look, deeper charcoal or slate accents on window frames, shelving, or accent chairs echo the darker markings on the birch trunks and lend crisp definition to the overall space.
